For the times they are a-changin

You’re all thinking Bob Dylan and that’s okay.  Maybe some of his song will align with this long, overdue blog.  It’s been awhile and I apologize.  Also, if you don’t care about protecting yourself, your family, and the others you care about, just stop reading this now.  Put your gun in the safe, lock it up, and one day maybe you’ll get your money back when you sell it.

I’ve devoted a fair amount of my life to firearms training, starting with my dad at age 6 who thought it was more important to throw a .22 in my hand first, followed with a 44 Magnum, instead of learning to say “Daddy” first.  Thank you Dad!!  My firearms world progressed from changing old habits, to learning from some of the finest individuals on the planet.  My investment is enormous, from thousands of hours of learning, thousands of hours of training, to an increasing six figure dollar investment.  This has evolved into being fortunate enough to provide training for many Law Enforcement officers, agencies, military, and civilians, which I’m proud to say I still do today.  My passion is training, but more specifically passing along a mindset that the majority of the planet just doesn’t seem to get.  More on that later.

That brings us to the current state of our world today.  A world that’s not getting any better.  Some of us got the initial wake-up call when we got clobbered with the Covid virus.  A battle we’re still fighting.  Millions of guns, the majority of them new gun owners, were sold wiping out retail inventory, not to mention manufacturer inventory.  Ammunition is no different.  Gear and accessories are a close second.  It’s a difficult struggle to find anything worth owning right now.  This is expected to continue for many, many months.  There are reports that some of the bigger firearms companies will not survive.

The latest events involving Law Enforcement are a tragedy from many, many perspectives.  First, a “bad apple” officer overstepped his duty and morals and took the life of another.   He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law like anyone else.  There are “bad apples” in every profession and its everyones job to remove them now, not later.  And it starts with management and the co-worker.

Next, the current protests we’re seeing were re-ignited with a racial agenda.  Is there a racial problem in Law Enforcement?  Is there a racial problem in our country?  I can’t answer that question because the people I surround myself with and train is not part of their mindset.  The color of one’s skin is irrelevant to me and those around me.  The lessons we’ve learned from the past should never be forgotten.  Mistakes and successes are how we grow.  RIGHT and WRONG is my moral compass.  Period.

Peaceful protests are usually a good thing.  It’s telling everyone there might be a problem.  Let me say I’m a 110% supporter of all rights our country was built on including, but not limited to, free speech, religion, fair trial, due process, and the right to bear arms.  Protesting that includes violence and destruction are WRONG.  Period.

Whether everyone who is jumping on the racial bandwagon currently is justified is up to you.  I have my own opinions.  The point of my long rant (I apologize now) is that the world of Law Enforcement is going to change.  For the good and bad.  Good that focus is being placed on the bad apples and eliminating them.  Good that de-militarization of Law Enforcement will be addressed.  Good that time spent on traffic stops to find a problem will be minimized.  Good that maybe some techniques are not necessary.

The bad will go like this:

  1. Reduced moral
  2. Reduced presence
  3. Increased time to assist
  4. More hands-off approach
  5. Smaller pool of qualified recruits
  6. Increase of crime
  7. Increase of murder

If you live in a big city, plan on a multiplier of X for the above, as compared to the smaller cities and rural areas.  If you live in a BLUE city, multiply that again.

Add to all this the increase in poverty with the impending economic impact were facing and you’ll start to see more wolves looking for prey (the sheep).

Add to this the millions of new gun owners that are more of a liability today than before because they have no training.

Add to this the xx million gun owners that are still a liability today because they don’t think they need training.

The majority of threat incidents involving a firearm happen within 5 feet and are over in 2.5 seconds.  The majority of these incidents involve more than 1 threat.  Pressing the trigger does not win that fight.  Moving and drawing from your holster in under 1 second, and engaging a threat in 1.5 seconds does.  And that needs to happen unconsciously.

Simply owning a gun does nothing for you, except if your fortunate enough to scare a threat away.  Going to the indoor range does a little more, like learning how to load/unload your firearm, press the trigger, and shoot on the X.  Please, please, please get yourself, your family, and your friends some training from someone who is qualified on DEFENSIVE use.  For the times they are a-changin.
